Endiro Coffee in downtown Aurora was recognized recently with a national award from the Specialty Food Association.
The coffeehouse, 29 W. New York St., won a 2022 sofi Award in the Coffee and Cocoa category.
It won for its Uganda Bududa Bukalasi Coffee, the first time a Ugandan product has won such an honor. The sofi Awards are given by the Specialty Food Association, which represents the $170.4 billion specialty food industry.
Endiro Coffee’s Uganda Bududa Bukalasi Coffee was one of 102 winners selected by a panel of specialty food experts from nearly 2,000 entries across 53 product categories.
Products are judged on taste, including flavor, appearance, texture and aroma, ingredient quality and innovation, according to a news release announcing the award. All tastings are anonymous and are held at the Rutgers Food Innovation Center.
“We are honored that our flagship coffee has won a New Product Award,” said Cody Lorance, co-CEO of Endiro Coffee. “As entrepreneurs, we are always looking for ways to know that our product is loved. This is one of the ultimate stamps of approval for the work done by Endiro farmers in Uganda and our roastery team in the USA and we’re very grateful.”
Endiro’s Uganda Bududa Bukalasi Coffee is available online at endirocoffee.com, at cafe locations and at participating retailers including Trader Joe’s stores.
The sofi Awards are open to members of the Specialty Food Association and have been given each year since 1972. Winners will be showcased at the 2022 Summer Fancy Food Show, running June 12-14, at the Javits Center in New York City.
Endiro Coffee was founded in 2011 in Kampala, Uganda. It grows coffee in Uganda, operates cafes in Uganda and the United States, and roasts for wholesale. Both the U.S. coffeehouse and the roaster are in Aurora. The roaster is at 213 S. River St., also downtown.
Endiro’s vision is to end child vulnerability globally through coffee, and gets its supply of beans in partnership with growers in Uganda.
It has been recognized both by the city of Aurora and the state of Illinois for its Aurora location.
The Specialty Food Association was founded in 1952 in New York City, and represents manufacturers, importers, retailers, distributors, brokers, and others in the trade.
