Best Bushwacker Milkshake Drink Recipe

There is no more decadent a phrase than “chocolate Piña Colada milkshake.” Yeah, just let that one swirl around in your head for a moment.

Done swirling? Onto cocktail-making. The Bushwacker, which is more or less a chocolate Piña Colada milkshake, minus any pineapple flavor, is one doozy of an alcoholic beverage. It belongs in that category of indulgent drinks that double as dessert, but sweets in moderation be damned, you’d down four of them without feeling a twinge of guilt given the chance. This is that chance. With our recipe, you can halve the rum portion to ease up on your ABV, if you so desire. You can garnish with restraint, or build a towering mountain of whipped cream. You can chug it so fast your brain freezes up. There’s really no way to not enjoy a frozen drink whose ingredients joninclude coffee liqueur, chocolate-y liqueur, and coconut cream.

A Little Background

The supposed history of the Bushwacker is, well, a little weak on the corroboration. If you go down a few Internet holes, you’ll find a few references to its origins at the Sapphire Village on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, around 1975. A cluster of condos overlooking sandy beaches, crystal-blue waters, and sunbeams? Sounds like as good a place as any to be struck with the inspiration to blend a chocolate Piña Colada. The Bushwacker then made it to the Florida mainland by way of the Sandshaker Lounge in Pensacola Beach, which holds an annual Bushwacker Fest to this day. It’s a Bushwacking haven. (For reference, the term “bushwhacker” also refers to a guerilla warfare technique. There doesn’t seem to be much of a relation.)

If You Like This, Try These

If frozen coconut drinks are to your liking, then get yourself a Piña Colada as soon as possible if it’s summertime, and Coquito if it’s wintertime. A Painkiller works anytime. Stepping outside the realm of frozen coconut, you get a slew of tropics-friendly cocktails that both look and taste like a beach party, in the best way possible. For example, the rum monster that is the Zombie, the fruitier and lighter Hurricane, or the Rum Runner, which falls somewhere in between.

Here’s what you need to do a Bushwacker justice, beyond what you might be able to dig out of the fridge or cupboard.
