Conquer cramps and injuries from running with these products to aid recovery

PARK runs are back, and next month the London and Manchester marathons take place.

Running is more popular than ever, but more training means more injuries.

Here, I looked at ways to aid recovery while our Beauty Editor puts body scrubs to the test.

BATH: When magnesium levels are low, your muscles can contract too much, sparking cramps or muscle spasms. So it is a great mineral to aid recovery.

Magnesium helps regulate the flow of electrolytes in and out of cells to promote muscle relaxation. Healthspan Magnesium Flakes Bath Soak are great if you dislike tablets as the mineral absorbs through the skin. (1kg bag, £9.95, healthspan.co.uk)

ICE PACK: Instead of grabbing a bag of peas from the freezer to use as an ice pack for an injury after a run, make your own ice pack with the Stasher Stand-Up.

Fill it with ice to soothe tight, sore muscles and decrease pain and swelling.

I love these. They come in different sizes, and you can use them to store food too if you’re doing meal prep! (From £9.99 at amazon.co.uk).

RUB: Arnica is a herb with lactones, which have an anti-inflammatory effect. It’s great for post-exercise stiffness and sporting injuries.

A Vogel gel can be massaged into strains and sore muscles post-exercise.

Research shows it is as effective as ibuprofen topical gels. (£12.35 for 100ml, avogel.co.uk).

BUDGET: Superdrug Vitamin E Sugar Oil body scrub (£4.99, 300ml, superdrug.com): Body scrub formulated with natural exfoliants – sugar, sea salt and walnut shell granules.

It was grainy enough to give a good exfoliation but the addition of sweet almond and grapeseed oils meant it was gentle on the skin. Contains vitamin E to protect against free radicals and a multivitamin complex to help nourish dryness. Smells gorgeous and left my skin wonderfully smooth and soft. Amazing for under a fiver.

MID: Frank Body Charcoal body scrub and mask (£14.95, 140g cultbeauty.co.uk): Coffee scrub made with more than 98 per cent naturally derived ingredients.

Caffeine is known to tone the skin and charcoal draws out impurities to reduce breakouts.

Grapeseed oil softens and hydrates while milk thistle oil combats premature ageing. I’m not a big fan of coffee scrubs because they are messy, but this is a dream to use, leaving skin soft as silk. My favourite.

LUXURY: Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum body scrub (£39, 220g, lookfantastic.com): A sister product to the famous body cream, this contains sugar, salt and guarana seeds to scrub and firm the skin.

Coconut, acai and cupuacu butters nourish to leave it soft and supple. The fruity, coconutty scent is incredible – like summer in a tub!

The exfoliation is great and the smell lingers on the skin. It’s expensive but it feels like a luxury treatment.
