New businesses, Eden’s Bakery and Gladys’ Pizzeria, have opened in 990 Oakland Ave., Indiana, offering homemade pizzas and baked goods from family recipes.
The project is a partnership between Andrew Frassenei from Saltsburg and Eden McCracken from Homer City.
Frassenei is a pizza maker that uses grandmother Gladys Frassenei’s recipes for sauces and dough from scratch.
His new job with a Master of Health / Physical Education is quite different from his previous job as a fitness director, personal trainer and PE teacher.
But he was ready for change.
“This is the first job I felt unsuccessful,” he said.
Pizza is more than just food for Frassenei.
“Pizza is my family, my grandmother,” he said. “For me, food is a homage to the past.”
His grandmother comes to help with the sauce and other aspects.
Bakery manager McLaken said he started baking at the age of 13 to sell treats to family and friends as a way to make money in summer camps.
Over the years, “it has become my own small business,” she said.
She attended Westmoreland County Community College with that passion and earned an associate degree in baking / pastry. Her previous employment included an internship at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh and management of Spinola’s bakery in Mary’s Building.
The bakery offers cookies, pastries, breakfast items and sweets, but the menu is constantly changing.
She said so far, cinnamon rolls and scones are customers’ favorites.
The company also offered Commonplace Coffeehouse coffee.
McCracken also accepts special orders for cakes and cupcakes.
Frassenei and McCracken make all dishes from scratch. The dough is mixed fresh daily and the sauce is boiled for 3 hours.
“Attention is paid to everything that happens here,” said Frassenei. “Love and care.”
It is open June 11th and daylight savings time is from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
With the return of students from the neighboring Indiana University in Pennsylvania, business hours are expected to change this fall.
Eden’s Bakery and Gladys’ Pizzaria is located in the former Pizza House, originally owned by Johnny Tsiris.
Frassenei and McCracken said Tsiris will be in business and will make homemade soup in the fall.
For now, McCracken and Frassenei are working on their own, but expect to hire some employees in the coming weeks.
They said they helped family and friends make everything possible.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do that without friends and family,” Frassenei said.
Guests at Eden’s Bakery and Gladys’ Pizzeria can dine in indoor or outdoor seating.
