Kenny & Ziggy’s new location opens this week with new amenities and a Broadway theme

Ziggy Gruber is holding a 3-foot-long pickle, one of his favorite props from his life as a deli man, getting ready to place it within the wonderland of mementos, archival photos, Broadway Playbills and deli tchotchkes that fill the new Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen Restaurant.

“It’s a big dill,” said the quick-with-the-pun restaurateur.

But he’s not kidding. It really is a big deal.

After 21 years, Kenny & Ziggy’s closed the show at 2327 Post Oak on Jan. 16 in preparation for the transfer to a slick new home up the street at 1743 Post Oak. The new restaurant, with its theater-loving, give-my-regards-to-Broadway décor, is ready to cue the conductor for a grand, opening day overture on Feb. 2 in what Gruber hopes will be long run at the new location.

UP IN SMOKE: Houston Barbecue Festival returns for 2022

Gruber and business partner, Lenny Friedman, have invested handsomely in this new act for one of Houston’s favorite restaurants (and one of America’s most famous Jewish delis). Kenny & Ziggy’s fans have been eagerly anticipating this new production in the home of a former Luby’s cafeteria.

“It’s the best and most unique store I built,” Gruber said.

Curtain’s up. Here are the new restaurant’s features:

The Spritzer Bar: a full-service bar for cocktails and signature drinks. The cocktail area includes both booth and counter seating and is separated from the dining area by waist-high, brass-accented partitions.

Soda fountain and coffee bar: Guests can enjoy fancy milkshakes and coffee and espresso drinks at a soda fountain counter with its own soda jerks who will also serve up desserts such as sundaes, cakes, pies, and cookies.

The Schmooze Room: A private dining room for various dining and meeting functions that has its own adjoining covered patio. It has room for as many as 100 seated guests.

Patio seating: Unlike the previous location, the deli’s new outpost will have patio seating in front and back; two separate areas for al fresco dining.

K&Z Cakeworks: The Company’s thriving bakery production arm will have a new home within the deli’s expansive kitchen facilities.

Gruber is especially proud of the new restaurant given that his father and grandfather were also successful deli men. Gruber’s grandfather opened The Rialto Delicatessen near New York’s famed Rialto Theater in 1927, the first Jewish deli to open on Broadway.

“I really wish my dad and my grandfather were here to see this,” he said.

Behind the deli counter the date of The Rialto’s opening can be found on the wall. “There’s definitely a lot of nostalgic stuff here,” Gruber said. “It’s modern, but you’ll still step back into time.”

The touches are everywhere, he said, including some you can’t see. The restaurant’s soundtrack – a mix of Broadway showtunes, Rat Pack-era hits, and even a bit of vintage Yiddish radio adverts – is really something to hear.

And don’t forget the giant pickle. Gruber said he kept it sanitized during the pandemic, and gave it a good polishing for Wednesday’s big opening.

Kenny & Ziggy’s will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.  For more information, call 713-871-8883; kennyandziggys.com.
