San Antonio-based Merit Coffee Co. gave more than $13,000 to area kids through the power of Fiesta and “Baby Yoda.”
The coffee chain with locations throughout Texas, including five in San Antonio, presented a $13,483 check to Snack Pak 4 Kids on May 14. The non-profit organization works to provide weekend food supplements for local children who are chronically hungry. Merit Coffee’s donation will go toward filling 4,000 Snack Paks, which is enough to take care of 90 San Antonio kids for an entire school year. A “Baby Yoda” Fiesta medal helped the coffee company fulfill their promise, even in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, which has hit the service industry hard.

Though a lid remains on Fiesta until the fall, people are still snagging the corresponding merchandise. Medals, the pinable mementos commemorating each year, are always a highly coveted item for Fiesta fanatics. This year, Merit went with a “Baby Yoda” theme, creating a medal showing a character like The Child from “The Mandalorian,” colloquially known as “Baby Yoda,” sipping a cup of Merit Coffee while wearing a sombrero. Thousands of dollars later, the idea was evidently a hit.
The donation was made as local businesses grapple with the response to the coronavirus pandemic. As an essential business, Merit was allowed to remain open. Justin Frey, the company’s creative manager, credits their clients and CEO Bill Ellis for being able to remain charitable.
“It’s really that simple — we gave our word and stood by it,” Frey said. “They’ve (customers) faithfully stood by us through this whole thing. And we’ve stood by them.”
Frey said Ellis’ people-focused mission has not been forgotten in the pandemic era.
“He, along with our team, put us in a position to where we can be generous. We have such a phenomenal team of coffee professionals — everyone from our roasting and production team, to our baristas and district managers,” he said.
There’s still a chance to buy a medal. Merit will start pre-orders on the company website for the third and final round of medals on Wednesday. The proceeds from the upcoming sales will also benefit Snack Pak 4 Kids.
