Popular coffee shop gets new ownership

For five years Emilie Bullock has been a faithful customer at LilyBean Coffee and Creamery’s drive-thru location on Marion St. Today, she owns the place.

LilyBean owners Chad and Meghan Stout announced last week they had sold their midtown location to Bullock. The name of the business will remain the same, as will its coffee and employees, they said.

“We are so thrilled to have Emilie join the LilyBean family, and we can’t wait to see how she grows that location,” said Meghan.

Bullock said she decided to buy the location after talking with the Stouts about their business and the midtown location. She told the couple if ever they wanted to sell or close a location, she would be interested in buying it.

“I love this shop, I come here every day, and I didn’t want to see it close down. I could just see the potential in it,” Bullock said. “I felt it had not reached its potential, and I didn’t want to see it close down. I know a lot of people come through here, I come here a lot. I just like coffee.”

While the coffee and service will remain the same, Bullock said she has plans to expand offerings at the midtown store. This week she introduced a breakfast bagel to the menu, the first of planned breakfast offerings she hopes to introduce. She’s also installed picnic tables for use by walk-up customers. She plans to repaint the building and perform some landscaping updates to the property.

“The first week has been good. People seem excited, some of the regulars seem excited. We were hoping it would be received well, and it has been,” she said. “With it already starting to get warmer we are already starting to see people get the smoothies and frozen lemonade and again Tony’s Ice Cream and milkshakes. People also love their cold coffees, and frappes are picking up.”

Bullock may be the first person to purchase a LilyBean location from its original owners, but she is not the first person to ask about it. Meghan said that for years people have asked about the possibility of franchising the business.

Since announcing the sale of the midtown location, the couple has received inquiries about opening locations in Hickory and Nashville.

“I don’t know how fast we would pursue that,” said Meghan. “We have all of our recipes in one place, and I developed that with our team with a thought that if we wanted to share we could do that.”

LilyBean Midtown is located at 711 E Marion St, Shelby. It is open 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
