Global warming and climate change has been a hot topic amongst politicians, businesses and individuals for some time now. As the world gets closer to 2ºC warmer than pre-industrial levels, we all need to be more mindful of how our actions affect the world around us.

Every little step taken can help save our planet Earth, through our food, fashion and everyday choices. Here’s ten hacks you can start implementing to your lifestyle today to help you go green.

Fashion:

The fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters. It produces 10% of all humanity’s carbon emissions, is the second-largest consumer of the world water supply and pollutes the ocean with microplastics each year.

Consider purchasing good quality pieces to suit your current wardrobe from companies with recycled collections or finding unique pieces from second-hand shops. Always use the method “one in one out” to help declutter by donating & selling your pre-loved items at charity shops, through facebook marketplace or apps like carousell. 

Food:

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, over 1.3 billion tons of food ends up in landfills every single year. Support your local farmers market and buy seasonally. Consider buying in bulk from bulk food stores where you bring your own containers, this will help reduce use of packaging and also means cutting back on energy and gases travelling to the store. Reduce food waste by freezing food or creating a compost for your garden from food scraps. Double up on your recipes for leftovers which will also save on energy cooking the food.

Diet:

One of the biggest personal factors we have on the environment is through our diet. Switching to a more plant based diet reduces water and land use, lowers pollution, slows deforestation and more. Eating a plant based diet is also a way to achieve good health with the diet being linked to lower risk of obesity and many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancer. A simple google search of “vegetarian recipes” or tag on Instagram will give you some inspiration for your next meal! #yum

Beauty:

More than ever consumers are interested in natural and environmentally friendly cosmetic products. A lot of big beauty brands are vegan and cruelty free so it’s becoming much easier to make the swap and choose wisely. We all know the devastating toll those tiny, plastic microbeads are for the environment, with companies now banning them in their products. You can go a step further and use a bamboo toothbrush, cotton facial rounds or an old flannel shirt and a good oil cleanser instead of make up wipes at night or pick up shampoo bars that have zero packaging.

Travel:

Flying is one of the most environmentally damaging things you can do. So why not try an adventure closer to home by camping, hiking and cycling. Whether you’re heading overseas or just to the beach for the day, think about your journey. Use public transport or ride shares wherever possible. You can also hop on a bike which will be better for your health and allow you to explore more on your journey. Always try to leave as little behind as possible. Pack sustainably and minimally as possible, bring your own toiletries to minimise waste. Don’t forget to unplug your home. 

 

Go Paperless:

The paper industry is the fifth largest consumer of energy in the world. Try to go paperless by only printing documents if necessary and opt for recycled paper. Use paperless billing by paying your bills electronically.

Work:

Encourage staff to recycle and use dishes instead of one-off plastic. Recycle used office supplies whenever possible such as old mobile phones. Ask customers if they need their receipts before printing them. Turn computers off when not using them and bring some indoor plant life into the office to help clear the air of toxins. You can also make sure the kitchen/bathroom cleaning products are eco-friendly.

Home:

Recycle your plastic, aluminium and paper products. Make sure your appliances and electronics are as energy efficient as possible, this way your saving money and reducing your power output. Changing your light bulbs to LED lights uses 80% less energy. Unplug each day, reconnect with family and friends or go out and enjoy nature.  Purchase green cleaning products to avoid harmful chemicals, better for your health and the environment! 

Laundry:

Wash clothes using cold water & use environmentally-friendly biodegradable laundry products. Some of the chemicals in laundry detergent can be toxic to our marine life, so by using biodegradable laundry products means that your grey water is less likely to negatively impact your local waterways. Skip the dryer and hang your clothes out to dry.

Ditch the plastic:

Did you know your single use coffee cups can’t actually be recycled? Invest in a reusable coffee cup. Instead of buying lunches in BPA lined plastic you can bring your own lunches in a metal lunchbox or use reusable containers at home instead of plastic sandwich bags. We’re all conscious of bringing our canvas bags when we go shopping, so consider purchasing unpackaged fruit and vegetables, or opting for cans and cardboard that are widely recycled instead of plastic. Stop buying bottled water and carrying a large reusable drink bottle with you.
