GREENFIELD — Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee of Orange donated $5,000 in Big Y gift cards to Greenfield public schools’ Food Service Department for families in the city.
Since the beginning of pandemic-related school closures in March, the Greenfield School Department has aimed to ensure families do not go without school meals. To help make sure families had meals during Thanksgiving break, the schools provided five days of breakfasts and lunches starting on Nov. 25.
According to a press release from the Food Service Department, Dean’s Beans’ Human Resource Manager Katherine Parcel reached out to Superintendent Jordana Harper and Food Service Director Eliza Calkins to offer a donation to help with the pre-Thanksgiving break meal service. Dean’s Beans Founder and CEO Dean Cycon also expressed interest in donating a gift for each family to go out with meals on Nov. 25.
With Harper’s support, Parcel and Calkins worked with kitchen managers Starr Hurd and Teri Poirier to brainstorm a gift idea to share with families. Ultimately, Dean’s Beans donated $5,000 worth of $10 gift cards to Big Y.
“We cannot thank Dean’s Beans enough for all of their support and generous donations during this difficult time,” Calkins said in the press release. “I know that (the gift cards) will be much appreciated.”
According to the release, the Food Service Department has been providing seven days of to-go breakfasts and lunches each week, served on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Greenfield High School, Greenfield Middle School, Newton Elementary School and Oak Courts.
In May, Cycon said that making sure children have access to food throughout the pandemic “is crucial,” and that he is proud to support essential food programs. Dean’s Beans has donated thousands of dollars to school food programs across four counties.
“The success of a business should be about more than the sum of dollars kept,” Cycon explained at the time. “Part of a company’s profitability is the positivity it generates for others, and we are committed to helping our communities ease the pain of this crisis.”
