September 29 is National Coffee Day, and the perfect way to celebrate is by upping your morning cup o’ Joe. Instead of the usual drip coffee with cream and two sugars, take one of these recipes for a spin.
They only seem complicated to execute, so both self-proclaimed coffee snobs and instant Java lovers alike can enjoy a pick-me-up this fall.

Last year, Starbucks introduced the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew to its range of beloved seasonal beverages (namely, the Pumpkin Spice Latte). The drink offered cold-coffee lovers a chilled alternative that is also less sweet than its syrupy counterpart. But at around $5 a pop for a grande, it’s expensive for a daily indulgence.
Thankfully, Gimme Some Oven’s Ali Martin says the recipe is surprisingly easy to recreate at home. First, pour about a cup and a half of your favorite kind of cold coffee. You can use store-bought cold brew, homemade cold brew, homemade iced coffee — anything! To create the Starbucks autumnal flavor, add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract and sweeten with 3 teaspoons maple syrup.
To create the foam, you’ll need a milk frother. Anything from an affordable handheld wand to a high-quality milk frother will get the job done. Combine 1/4 cup milk (Starbucks uses whole milk and heavy cream, but you can use any kind of cow’s milk — skim whips up the best) with 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin puree, 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, and a pinch of sea salt.
Froth the milk using your frother and then spoon over your iced coffee. Sprinkle a shake of pumpkin pie spice on top, for garnish.
For a delicious dessert any time of day, treat yourself with an affogato. The ultimate Italian indulgence, this espresso-based beverage started with a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream.
Italian appliance brand Smeg shares the recipe in just three easy steps:
1. Brew 50ml of hot espresso coffee.
2. Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream into a dessert glass or cup. Drown (the literal meaning of ‘affogato’) the ice cream with the coffee and serve whilst warm and melting.
3. For an added treat, you can shave milk chocolate on top.
Unless you had your head under a rock for all of quarantine, you’ve probably already heard of Dalgona coffee. The viral TikTok drink whips up equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water to a satisfying froth, which is then spooned over cold milk.
For fall, Fit Foodie Finds is giving the drink an appropriately seasonal spin. To make the pumpkin spice Dalgona coffee, place 2 tablespoons instant coffee, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon pumpkin puree, 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, and 2 tablespoons hot water in a large bowl.
Combine the ingredients using a handheld electric mixer or milk frother until they form stiff foam peaks. Then, make your autumnal almond milk by mixing one cup with a tablespoon of maple syrup (shake in a mason jar to combine). Pour the milk two cups with ice and top each glass with your pumpkin spice Dalgona coffee. Stir together with a spoon or reusable straw and enjoy!
It takes a lot of skill to create barista-worthy foam latte art with a milk pitcher. Thankfully, there’s another way. By using your choice of spice (like cinnamon or cocoa) and a stencil, anyone can whip up cafe-worthy creations.
First, you’ll want to create a hot coffee or espresso topped with tight foam. As with the pumpkin cream cold brew, you can create great foam using an espresso maker with steamer or a handheld milk frother. You want to pour your foam on top of the coffee or espresso so that it is just below the top of your mug. Scoop off and level any foam that is too high.
Then, gently lay your stencil on top. You can purchase cute coffee stencils on Amazon or make your own using a die cutter. (Etsy also has personalized stencils you can order.)
Gently shake your spice through a mesh strainer over your foam until the stencil is filled in. Carefully remove, and enjoy all the Instagrammable goodness before taking that first sip!
