Whether it’s because you’re worried about the damage to the environment, or you’re feeling the pinch of the purse string this month, creating a beauty mask at home is easier than you think.
‘Coffee, avocado and oats all sound like a delicious, healthy breakfast,’ says Christine Zalnieraite, Head of Nutrition at wellness brand Beyond Body.
‘But what if I told you these go-to breakfast options could make your skin look just as delicious. There are many well-known breakfast ingredients like this that can make the skin look and feel healthier.
‘For example, avocado contains vitamin E and C, which protects the skin from sun damage and helps the skin’s vitality. It also contains biotin, a B vitamin that helps with the skin’s dryness.
‘And coffee is a natural exfoliant for the skin and when it’s applied directly, you can see a rapid change in the dermis.’
Christine is the author of the wellness book, Beyond Body, which uses health analytics to create personalised nutrition and health plans.
In the book she advocates the importance of home-made food. ‘When you enter the world of healthy eating, spending more time in the kitchen is something you should definitely get used to,’ she says.
‘Cooking at home helps you reduce your consumption of processed food and sugar. It makes you think about the ingredients you use, the kind of nutritional value they have. Step by step, you are turning into a thoughtful eater and not only that, it saves you a ton of money.’
According to Christine, this knowledge can then be transferred to your beauty masks.
‘Why invest your money in high-quality products, when you have some of the same ingredients at home?’ she asks.
‘Many women may not realise the summer heat steals moisture and nutrients from the body, which leads to dry skin.
‘Over the course of the summer months, this damage can lead to lost elasticity and premature ageing. By creating some simple, all-natural do-it-yourself beauty masks at home, you can protect the skin, boost your health and wellbeing and save a few pennies, too.’
You can even to create the perfect beauty regime in your kitchen.
Head nutritionist at Beyond Body Christine Zalnieraite says that ingredients such as bananas, honey, yoghurt and oats that would ordinarily make an enticing and healthy breakfast can also be a great way of keeping your skin supple over the summer months.
Here she shares four of her favourite all-natural face mask recipes that you can easily whip up at home.
‘This completely edible face mask is perfect for those days when you feel like your face needs some extra hydration,’ she says.
‘Yoghurt is full of calcium, riboflavin, vitamins B6 and B12, and lactic acid that helps to make your skin smooth and tighten the pores.
‘Honey is great for acne and breakout-prone skin due to its antibacterial properties, and the natural oils in avocado will effectively plump up dry areas.’
‘Oats are famous for their anti-inflammatory powers as they are full of antioxidants,’ she says.
‘Their moisturising properties are a perfect match for dry and itchy skin, while the honey and sugar scrub leaves your skin glowing for days. It can also reduce any redness.’
Why not give yourself the effect of a chemical peel at the cost of just a few pounds?’ continues Christine.
‘The citric acid that is found in oranges is a natural source of alpha-hydroxy acid, which will exfoliate and cleanse. And added to that, thanks to vitamins C and B6 found in bananas, your skin will look instantly brighter and glowing.’
Can’t imagine your mornings without a cup of coffee?’ Christine asks. ‘A perfect way to reuse coffee grounds is to make a body scrub.
Coffee is great for revitalising the skin and will exfoliate, increase circulation, and help to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Use after a warm shower, or in the bath for best results.’
