New Delhi: Coffee is a popular beverage. This makes caffeine, the stimulant found in caffeine, one of the most widely consumed drug. The reason behind its popularity is its ability to tighten the senses and boost energy, thereby boosting the abilities to work. When talking about mental health conditions, a significant number of people suffer from anxiety disorders. Anxiety can be triggered by various day-to-day activities. Certain food items also have the ability to exacerbate the symptoms of anxiety. Coffee is an integral part of people’s everyday lifestyle. Can it affect the symptoms of anxiety in any way? There have been studies, such as the “Neuropsychiatric effects of caffeine” published in Cambridge University Press, that talked extensively about the adverse effects of caffeine. It was said that it could make disorders related to sleep and anxiety worse. According to a study published in PubMed Central called, “Caffeine consumption and self-assessed stress, anxiety, and depression in secondary school children”, it was quoted that “When consumed in moderation it appears that there are no serious adverse health effects associated with its use by adults or children. However, it has been advised that those who are highly sensitive should not consume >400 mg/d, to avoid headaches, drowsiness, anxiety, and nausea.”

Coffee may be a preferred beverage for most people, however, one must make sure that it is consumed in moderation to avoid any unhealthy consequence. If you can’t avoid the consumption, try to replace the beverage with healthier options such as herbal tea. Also, always stay hydrated.
