An autopsy performed on an Upstate man found dead on a tractor with the engine running had been shot, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said in a release Thursday. Now, deputies are asking for the public’s help to find out what happened.Deputies were called Wednesday evening about a missing person at an address on Coffee Road, in Westminster, Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said. Deputies said the woman at the address told them she was not able to make contact with her husband, Danny Andrew Smith, 62. He had been bush hogging a field using a tractor, the woman told them. The woman heard the tractor running and saw it in a wooded area, Crenshaw said.Deputies found the Smith slumped over the steering wheel of the tractor unresponsive, Crenshaw said. Investigators along with the Coroner’s Office are calling the death a homicide and found Smith had died from a single gunshot wound to the body, he said.Coroner Karl Addis estimated the time of death to be between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.Investigators were canvassing the neighborhood Thursday, asking if anyone may have heard any gunshots in the area of Coffee Road on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.Investigators don’t know if it was a stray bullet or not, Crenshaw said. There is no evidence at this time to indicate any danger to the public, he said.
