Life is starting to feel normal again. But there are plenty of people still taking things slow and avoiding the crowds. Enter Skip, the app that lets you pre-order coffee and food and skip the queue.
Skip works at more than 2000 cafes and eateries nationwide. In just a few taps you can order takeaway from your local, or that new venue you’ve been meaning to try. Simply pre-pay in the app and choose your pick-up time. Then you can zip in and out, with a minimum of close contact.
Some of our top picks on the app include feel-good Carlton North cafe Sibling and drive-through sanga shop Saul’s in Melbourne, health-focused cafe Mentmore & Morley and cosy coffee destination Joe Black in Sydney, Contessa in Brisbane, Ayla’s Cafe in Adelaide and Tbsp in Perth.
Skip is now in its seventh year of operation. While it launched with the obvious aim of helping users skip queues, the team never foresaw two years of lockdowns across the country – where avoiding queues and grabbing takeaway became the norm – and how much Skip would aid hospitality businesses.
“Skip enabled our venue partners to keep their doors open, maintain requirements with social distancing and reduce dwell times,” says CEO Bill Bizos. “We also responded to requests from venues and switched our business model to allow businesses to deliver food to customers themselves. By doing this they maintained their profit – some foreign-owned delivery services take over 35 per cent of every dollar – potentially offered a new service to their local customers and, most importantly, kept waitstaff and kitchen staff in jobs.”
Forgot your reusable cup at home? Skip is also committed to making your morning coffee routine more sustainable with its swap cup program, Skip Zero. Skip cafes have Australian-made, B Corp certified Skip Zero cups waiting for you when you purchase your coffee through the app. The cups are collected, crushed and re-purposed in Australia, and have built-in technology that lets you track the difference you’re making by using the program.
If you’re signed up to Broadsheet Access – our membership program delivering you the best experiences in your city – you can get a free coffee through Skip every month. Access is only $6.50 a month, so it almost pays for itself – and you get a whole heap of other benefits, like invitations to exclusive restaurant openings and member events, early access to tickets, discounts and more.
